MAY 15TH

THE RESURFACING OF THE TWO POOLS STARTED WITH THE NORTH POOL. THE FOLLOWING DISCRIPTIONS AND PICTURES ARE VIA EMAILS FROM HANK MAIER.

The work has started. As you can see the pool is empty and it only took a couple of hours for the two pumps to do the job.  After it was empty they took a steel rod and punched about four holes in the bottom of drain well so that water could drain out or up if there was excessive pressure in the water table.  Excessive rain at this point is their worst enemy.

You will notice the coping was removed in two places. These are areas where the tile had popped before. Well the thick bed of mortar they used to set the tiles was only a bandaid. Their contention is that using a layer of then-set which will be much thinner is the correct way to set the tile........being the active foreman on the job, I concur.

Another surprise, when they removed one of the ceramic bullnose from the steps there was another one under it.  This means that this set of steps was done  twice.  The team of workers that are there now do all the prep work. Removing all the tile and the final coat which can be from 1" to 3+" thick, then and acid wash it followed by a prep coat.  Then comes the next team, the finishers.

The committee who picked Penguin Pools is to be commended.

THE FOLLOWING PICTURES AND INFORMATION WERE PROVIDED BY TED SMITH

The north pool is almost finished with the removal of the pool liner. It has been a hot, dusty job, but the workmen seem to be good. They were not there today but will have a crew tomorrow for cleanup, etc. The coping has been measured and ordered. It generally takes two weeks to have coping delivered but Penguin is trying to rush the order. The drains have to be chipped out and the holes have to be filled behind the coping.  I am attaching 4 additional pics of the pool and a pic of the pipe that burst

Even though the demolition is not 100% complete, work has begun on the reconstruction of the pool.  The second phase will start from the top down. Starting with the coping, then the 6" x 6" tile below the coping and the final finish coat which I, like everyone else in CSC, are looking forward to seeing.  The pictures show how the gauged coat is applied for the Coping.  All but 15' was finished today.  According to John, the one in charge of this crew, the target date for setting the coping should hopefully be Mon. 6/2/08

Demolition of the south pool will begin as soon as the north pool is ready for use. The process to completion will be the same as was used on the north pool.  The only difference will be the addition of a second hand rail on the south steps entering the  pool.
